April is here, and you know what that means: longer days, spring planting, and… financial literacy? Hear us out.

Money Smart Week (April 5–12, 2026) is a national campaign focused on helping everyday folks feel more confident about managing their finances. And here at American State Bank, we think financial education doesn’t have to be boring or intimidating.

Whether you’re saving for a tractor, budgeting for prom, or finally figuring out where your paycheck disappears to every month, these three quick challenges are a great way to sharpen your money skills this spring. Bonus: you don’t need an app, spreadsheet, or financial advisor to get started.

1. Try a No-Spend Weekend

You read that right. The goal is to go one full weekend, Friday night through Sunday evening, without spending a dime beyond your regular bills and essentials.

Why it’s worth it:

A no-spend weekend helps you:

  • Recognize impulse purchases
  • Save money without feeling deprived
  • Get creative with what you already have

Tips to make it work:

  • Plan ahead. Use what’s in your pantry or freezer to cook meals.
  • Get out of the house, without opening your wallet. Think local hiking trails, free events, or an afternoon of yard work and fresh air.
  • Put your phone down. Social scrolling equals temptation to spend.

Track how much you would have spent and move that amount into savings. Our ASB mobile app makes this easy to do from your phone.

2. Take the $100 Savings Sprint

This 7-day challenge is all about making quick money moves that add up to $100 in savings by the end of the week. It’s fast-paced, motivating, and yes, you really can hit that goal!

Daily savings examples:

  • Cancel a subscription you forgot you had — $15
  • Brew your own coffee — $5/day
  • Skip takeout once — $25
  • Sell an unused item on Facebook Marketplace — $20+
  • Use grocery store loyalty points or coupons — $10

Friendly competition idea: Challenge your partner, teen, or co-worker to do it with you. Winner buys the other a coffee (next week!).

Open a secondary savings account just for mini challenges like this. We’ll help you set it up, name it something fun (like “New Boots Fund” or “Rainy Day Cash”), and get rolling.

3. Learn One New Thing About Your Money Each Day

This one’s for the curious minds, or the “I’ve been meaning to figure that out” folks. Each day of Money Smart Week, commit to learning just one new thing about your money.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • What exactly is a credit score, and why does it matter?
  • How is interest calculated on a loan or CD?
  • What’s the difference between checking, savings, and money market accounts?
  • How does a loan officer decide if you’re “approved”?

You don’t need to crack open a textbook. You can:

  • Read a short article
  • Watch a 3-minute video
  • Call your favorite local banker (Hi, that’s us!)

We promise we won’t give you a lecture. We’re just here to explain things in a way that makes sense and helps you feel confident with your money.

Bonus Challenge: Budget for One Goal

You don’t need to overhaul your finances overnight. Just pick one short-term goal and sketch out a simple budget.

Examples:

  • Buying seed or feed for spring
  • Graduation expenses
  • Booking that long-overdue family weekend
  • Setting aside money for back-to-school shopping

Once you map out how much you need and how long you have to save, break it into small weekly chunks. You might be surprised how manageable it feels once it’s on paper.
