Serving Southern Iowa Since 1987

In the spring of 1987, five families who all were deeply rooted in Southern Iowa with a variety of business interests came together with a common vision. Their vision was to ensure that families and businesses in their community would have choices in where to do their banking. April 1987 was at the deepest time of the economic struggles across Iowa and throughout the Midwest, with many businesses and families struggling financially. The new American State Bank opened its doors on April 24, 1987, at 1000 Jeffreys Drive in Osceola, Iowa. The new bank assumed the deposits and acquired the assets of the failed Osceola State Bank, which had been at the same location.

American State Bank grew rapidly in its first few years by showing the community “What a Bank Should Be”. The bank began with $800,000 capital and total assets of less than $8 million in 1987 and has steadily grown since. We established a presence in downtown Osceola when we acquired the branch office of First Central Bank at 101 N. Main Street in 1990, and expanded our footprint into Decatur County AND Northern Missouri when we opened another branch office at 801 E. Main Street in Lamoni, Iowa in 1998. In July of 2011, the bank purchased certain assets of Exchange State Bank’s branch in Winterset, Iowa. Financial Center services were added to that market in November of 2013.

Our growth and success have been driven by a solid commitment to our communities, an experienced and loyal staff, and a consistent responsiveness to our customers’ needs.

Early on, our founders laid out the Core Values of American State Bank that all associates are expected to abide by:

  • Honesty and Integrity - A community bank’s reputation is its most valuable resource.
  • Commitment to Our Customers - ASB is committed to respecting your privacy and protecting your financial resources while providing the highest possible level of quality financial services.
  • Commitment to Our Employees - ASB is committed to providing a safe, enjoyable, rewarding work experience with competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Sound Banking - ASB is committed to having the right people do the right thing the right way.
  • Support of Our Communities - We are a community bank, located here in southern Iowa and committed to responding to the needs of our communities in any way that we can.
